Let’s start of with some background. She is the first openly gay anchor to host a prime-time news program in the United States. yes I know about Anderson Cooper and he is hot. The key term is “openly” and though everyone know Anderson is gay and he overly quite about. He even avoids the issue when it is perfectly natural part of the story. Yes I know it shouldn’t matter, we are simply not there yet.
Rachel is a Rhodes scholar and has her doctorate in politics from Oxford University. She was also the first openly gay American to win the Rhodes scholarship.
As to her career I first heard her on the now defunct Air America though the first couple shows she was involved didn’t really catch my attention. The Rachel Maddow Show that was on after Randi Rhodes that caught me. It was funny while being informing one of the most entertaining political commentary shows I have ever listened to. Then she was more and more on Countdown with Keith Olberman and CNN. Not surprising FakeNews was not interested in her, though no one should be interested in FakeNews anyway. What she showed during this period of her career is her ability to ask the right question to jump in and not let anyone get away with anything. Though this is a clam example here is some of her current hard hitting style form Meet the Press on August 16, 2009:
She wants those that don’t agree with with on her show though they rarely agree to show given how she has always shown to be fools at best. The best or the most recent example of this her recent Interview segment with Dan stein the president of FAIR and her review of the segment the next night.
What you also should notice through out all these linked segments is the detail that she provides when covering a story. Other than PBS News Hour I have not heard the quality of quantity of detail provided. You can see this in her initial coverage of the tea party movement.
Finally, she is not willing to back off from the current administration when she disagrees with directions it is taking. The best examples of that are you continue presentation of DADT and her presenation that the health care reform doesn’t go far enough. Here are a couple of example out of many from The Rachel Maddow Show:
